Oscar Hair & Makeup Picks 2013- Nashville Makeup Artist

Here are my Oscar Picks for Best Hair and Makeup!

Stacy Keibler had such a healthy glow to her skin. And the bronzes really warmed her up.

Jennifer Hudson’s makeup look was well contoured and gently defined her face.

Loved Naomi Watt’s effortless updo. Soft and wispy.

Halle Berry’s hair do was tousled and sexy. And I always love metallics on sultry eyes and a nude lip.

Another wispy pretty updo on Amanda Seyfried. I’m not usually a fan of purples on the eyes, but this pale lavender worked with her pastel palette.

Jennifer Lawrence looked so pulled together with this soft, but still dramatic eye. Her cheeks were super sweet too.

Charlize Theron can do no wrong in my eyes. She looked so fresh with this clean makeup & hair and her white dress. This lip color was perfection.

Shopping For New Product pt. 2- Nashville Makeup Artist

Must Haves

There are a few items that are mandatory to have in your personal makeup kit. So when shopping for new product, if you don’t already have these, add them in.

Concealer- Everyone gets the occasional zit or sleepless night resulting in dark circles. Be prepared to cover up the ugly when it rears its head.
Brushes- A nice set of brushes will change the way your makeup goes on. It becomes easier to apply and has a much nicer finish than the fingers and Qtips you’ve been using. You don’t need a giant set, just a few basics. A foundation brush, a powder brush, two different eye brushes (one fluffy and tapered, one more flat and oval).
Mascara- You replace them every 3 months, so try various kinds to pick the best fit. Mascara wakes your eyes up.
Cheek color- Nothing too crazy for beginners. A flesh colored blush or one with a slight pink hue will do wonders for anybody. Just something to give your face a little color.
Eye Color- a neutral light and a neutral dark are necessary. Perfect for ANY occasion, and for the days when you don’t feel like putting a lot of effort into it. Think creamy beige and a matte brown.
Lip Color- a tinted balm is great to add a whisper of color. Rosy colors are universal choices that can bring life to your lips.

The Absolutely No Matter What Never Ever Do Not Buy List

Hot Pink- I don’t care what the sales girl says. You will not wear this. Unless you are a makeup veteran, it is very unlikely that hot pink eyeshadow will grace your lids even once after that New Years Eve party. Spending $20 on a color that you were persuaded to buy is a total waste, when you could have gotten a color you’d love forever and ever.
Spinning Mascara Wand- Are you too lazy to wiggle your normal wand back & forth? This is a gimmick.
Glitter- Reserved for 14 year old girls and Halloween.
Anti Aging “stuff”- Majority of cosmetics that claim to do wonders for your skin all while making you look pretty are lying. Focus your anti aging efforts in your skin care, diet, exercise, and sleep. If the product is anti aging, and you like it, then OK. But don’t buy it for its fountain of youth claims.
Dark brown Lip Liner- circa 1997. No one’s lips are naturally dark brown. And when your lipstick wears off and your have a dark brown line left around the edges, you’re going to look scary.

Happy Shopping!

Shopping for New Product Pt. 1 – Nashville Makeup Artist

When building or refreshing your personal makeup kit, the options for purchasing new cosmetics are endless. The cosmetic industry sells BILLIONS each year, and there are just about as many brands of lipstick to choose from. So how is one to decipher the plethora of stores, sales people, and products?

Let’s start with looking at where cosmetics are available for purchase.

The Drugstore

This includes your corner drugstores as well as larger stores like Walmart and Target. Here you will find many consumer brands and all the products you could need for a full personal makeup kit. There is also tools, brushes, and accessories like false lashes. Everything is categorized by type i.e. eyeshadows with eye products, lipcolors all together, etc. One of the pros about drugstores is that the items are inexpensive. So if you are trying out a new color or product type, there is little risk. These stores are also open very late, so you can grab something in a pinch pretty much any time of day or night. Biggest down sides to drugstores is that you can’t test anything out before you buy it. So that dream-mousse-whipped-fancy pants-looked nice on tv-foundation could turn out to be a flop, and you just lost your $10. Since there are no salespeople, there is no one available to ask questions about a product either. The other crummy thing is that majority of the brands carried in drugstores are not of great quality. They have a lot of fillers such as talc, so essentially you are paying for chalk and very little pigment. Drugstores are great for temporary products, such as mascara, and for one time use items like hot pink glitter eye shadow for a New Year’s party.  Overall, I wouldn’t build my entire makeup kit from the drugstore.

The Counters

All department stores have a cosmetic section with several counters. Each brand is clearly labeled and carries multiple products in each category. You could build and entire kit from one line, or mix & match from multiple lines. Counters carry brands that are higher quality than drugstores and therefore a bit more expensive. The packaging is nicer and the product lasts longer. Counters are run by salespeople that can aid you in sampling a particular shade or they can give you a full makeover. It’s a great opportunity to try out the items before committing. The problem though, is that counters are run by SALESpeople. Their job is to meet a quota set for them by the store so they will try to sell you the newest/holiday/limited edition/whatever works/ items. Chances are, if you are a woman 55 or over who rarely wears much on her eyes and has difficulty applying eye liner, you are not in need of a electric blue liquid liner. But one convincing chat with a salesgirl and you’ll walk out of that store with ten liners in various shades that you will never use. Also, the salespeople tend to be well versed in one line. Which means if there is a better item for you at another counter, you’ll never know about it because your salesperson doesn’t know and wouldn’t tell you even if they did.

Free standing stores

Free standing stores like Sephora are ideal for offering options for every person looking to purchase makeup. They carry several lines and all are of high quality. You can sample products on your own or ask a sales person for help. Scheduling an appointment for a full makeover can involve trying products from various lines all at once. The prices vary between lines, allowing everyone to find a good fit for their budget without sacrificing quality. If you purchase an item and decide later after using it that it isn’t a great fit for you, bring it back! They will refund you or help you find a replacement. The biggest issue with a store like Sephora, is that it can be very overwhelming. There are lots of lights, colors, shiny things that a person can become extremely overstimulated quite quickly. It’s not a store for browsing, but more suited for a hunt. You can walk in, go straight to a salesperson and say “I need…” and they will help you find it. Because they are not paid on commission, there isn’t the pressure of adding items to your purchase to satisfy their quotas.

Boutiques

Nashville has several options for getting the Sephora experience with multiple lines and educated salespeople, but on a smaller more manageable scale. Private Edition, Woo Cosmetics, and Cosmetic Market are a few. All the benefits of shopping at Sephora, but without the inevitable brain explosion. You can also find luxury lines at these locations that command big dollars, but invoke envy from all the other ladies in the YMCA locker room as you powder your nose with Sisley after spin class.

Part 2 of Makeup Shopping will discuss must have basics and the “absolutely do not no matter what” buy list.

Holiday Makeup Collections 2012- Nashville Makeup Artist

This holiday season is looking….. pretty. We’re talking lots of soft beiges and pinks with intensity being found in metallic finishes. Some lines have thrown in a few deeper reds or grays for added drama, but the overall theme of the season seems to be soft and delicate colors. Here are some of the Holiday 2012 Collections.

Bobbi Brown’s Holiday 2012 Collection shows off some very soft neutrals, lots of pink and beige and each palette named accurately portraying the array of oyster and pearl shades. Shimmers add plenty of sparkle to your holiday cheer.

Chanel Éclats du Soir de Chanel Holiday 2012 has so much dazzle. Metallic finishes in soft pink and cranberry, but add a little gold to really make it pop. A deep red lip and nail color makes this one sultry collection.

MAC Fabulousness Holiday 2012 Eyes Collection has the plushest looking satin and bow packaging. With three sets, there is sure to be a great fit for everyone. Several great neutrals with pops of pizzaz for warm, neutral, and smokey looks.

Tarte Carried Away Holiday Collection 2012 is HUGE. This palette comes in a great, multi compartment case that will make a great travel bag for all your family get togethers this season. Seeing many soft colors paired with bolder shades for eyes. All the lip colors are pretty as can be. And with a finishing powder, cheek color, and mascara, this collection has absolutely everything for a picture perfect holiday look.

Smashbox StudioPop for Lips Holiday 2012 Collection is filled with five universally flattering colors. Three nude shades and two pinks add high shine when adorned over any lipstick or worn alone.

I saved this NARS Andy Warhol Collection for last because it is such a fabulous oddball in the group of Holiday 2012 collections. In this Debbie Harry Eye & Cheek palette, two shimmering blushes sit beside four exciting eye colors truly Warhol inspired.  This palette is ideal for sparkly dresses and the New Year’s ball drop.

Thanksgiving Inspired Makeup- Nashville Makeup Artist

Thanksgiving brings certain things to mind every year. Pumpkin pie, crunchy fall leaves, layered sweaters, and the lovely allure of cranberry colors. Cranberry sauce, cranberry trimmed decor, cranberry cocktails! This brightly hued, but tart little berry packs a serious antioxidant punch and looks so nice dancing across skin. Here are some cranberry inspired cosmetics sure to get you in the giving spirit!

1 Stila Lip Glaze in Cranberry. A sheer brick red that gives you just a flush of color. Wear it alone for a just kissed look. Pair it up with a more opaque lipstick for an intense shine.

2 Makeup Forever eye color in Crimson. A matte cranberry that would totally dance when paired with a gold shadow and heavy black mascara. Work it into the outer corner of the eye for a delicious contrast.

3 Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush. This flush of berry will give your cold weather cheeks a delicate kiss of color and hydration. Pat it into the apples of the cheeks, blending well so that the color stays sheer. Keep it high on the cheeks for a more mature, dramatic look.

4 Jason Satin Shower Natural Body Wash Cranberry. Lather up with this cranberry oil body wash for soft skin. Use a fluffy loofah to help buff off any dry skin.

5 Burt’s Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Body Butter. Nourish and protect your skin from the cooler weather and smell yummy. Apply all over your body while skin is still damp from the shower to help lock in moisture.

Eye color & Eye shadow- Nashville Makeup Artist

I’ve often heard, “Well, since you have brown eyes you should wear this color” come from the mouths of many cosmetic counter associates and Mary Kay ladies. My clients who have also experienced this idea tend to get stuck feeling like their color choices are confined to what works for their particular eye color. I HATE THIS. Makeup is not about following protocol. It’s supposed to be fun and allow each person an opportunity to explore color, shape, and texture. So my rule of thumb: there are no rules! If hot pink makes you feel sassy, then wear it! It’s just important to keep your application clean. A face dressed up in all the “correct” color choices but an unfulfilled wearer is not going to be nearly as beautiful as the face decorated in lime green eye shadow that’s beaming with confidence. Wear what you love, not what the counter girl told you to. But I do also  understand the interest in knowing what colors can enhance your natural eye color. And while I love lime green, it’s not going to create the same dazzle when placed next to a crystal blue eye as another color choice might.

Blue Eyes- there are so many shades of blue ranging from icy crystal to deep ocean. But the general idea is to enhance the coolness of that color. You want to pair blues with warm oranges and yellows. This means choosing eye shadows that are gold, copper, warm browns and bronzes. Adding a dark liner will provide a dramatic contrast.

Green Eyes- Green eyes are usually very  bright anyway, so look great with colors that are vibrate against them. Plums, cranberries, and purples are gorgeous. Golds are a great way to warm up the green also.

Brown Eyes- Browns are darker and fair well when the colors around them bring brightness. Cool colors such as blue-grays, midnight blues, silvers are sure to bring light.

Hazel/light brown Eyes- This color is so versatile because hazel eyes can lean toward light brown or green with gold flecks, which means that different shadow choices can have various positive effects. To bring out the warmth in the brown or gold flecks, choose golden hues. To make the green sparkle, definitely aim for purples.

Neutrals- The great thing about neutral shadows is that they work well with basically any color. It’s just a matter of how heavy or light your application is. Creams, beiges, browns, taupes are all good ways to add shape and compliment any eye color.

Wear what you love, of course! But when aiming to really jazz up your already fabulous eye color, these tips give a great starting point.

Mascara Breakdown- Nashville Makeup Artist

“Break break downnnn….

So what do you do
When somebody you’re so devoted to
Suddenly just stops loving you
And it seems they haven’t got a clue
Of the pain that rejection is putting you through
Do you cling to your pride
And sing ‘I will survive’
Do you lash out and say ‘How dare you leave this way?’
Do you hold on in vain as they just slip away”

Let’s be real. Back in 1998, Mariah Carey wasn’t singing about her lost love. She was pining for mascara that stayed put all day and didn’t leave her with black circles around her eyes by 3pm! Many women face this problem daily and it becomes a source of great distress and nothing seems to be a great fix. Well there are a few reasons your mascara may be making a run for it.

Your eye cream. Many eye creams have oils in them that will eat your mascara. Many mascaras contain lanolin, mineral oil, linseed oil, or a variety of other oils. And since oil breaks down oil, your eye cream may be responsible for the slip and slide happening around your eyes. Look for an oil free formula, or skip the eye cream in the morning.

Your concealer. Under eye darkness is one of the biggest concerns I hear about. So of course, many ladies opt to use concealer under their eyes. Unfortunately many concealers act the same way as eye cream by using their oils for evil, smudging mascara all over. Make sure after you apply your concealer, you powder that area to set it and provide a barrier from your mascara.

Oily lids. Some ladies just have oily skin, which means their eye lids turn to creasy greasy messes. If you notice creases on your top lid and mascara smudges underneath, this could be you. Using an eye primer will provide a matte surface for your eye products and keep that oil from coming through.

Crummy mascara. I am not a proponent of spending $30 on mascara. Drugstore brands are just fine for daily use. But if you find a particular brand consistently slides on you, but others don’t, then by all means, switch brands! Waterproof mascaras should only be used when the possibility for crying, intense sweating, or water activities is inevitable. It is too tacky for everyday use and will end up breaking your lashes if you wear it too often. Regular formulas are best for daily use and there are definitely some solid brands at your local drugstore.

After examining which of these culprits could be leaving you raccoon eyed, it’s easy to see what steps to take to eliminate the problem.
